Managing Invasives the Organic Way

Learn about invasive plants, how they work their way into our gardens, what we can plant in place of them and how to use natural and organic methods to keep them at bay. Diane Olsen writes the weekly Valley Gardener column for the Poughkeepsie Journal and teaches several classes through Arlington H.S. Adult Education. She has been gardening at her home in LaGrange for 10 years.

MARCH 20TH
Bulbs, Corms, Tubers & Rhizomes- Getting to the Root of the Matter

We have one of our very favorite speakers returning-ANDREW KOEHN of Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY. Summer bulbs are a major part of gardening again- it's 'all about Dahlias!' Andrew will help us understand bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes- how to start them, grow them, use them in your gardens and displays, store them and even propagate! You always need more. Andrew is Garden Manager at the Mountain House and is responsible for the courageous containers, fabulous fuchsias and awesome alpines.

APRIL 3RD
Deer-Proofing Your Landscape

Drawing upon over 25 years of evaluating a wide range of popular and exotic woody ornamental plants, BRAD ROELLER highlights trees and shrubs that are inherently resistant to deer browsing. Discover the latest information about deer repellents and other proven methods of discouraging deer browsing. Mr. Roeller has been Manager of the Grounds and Display Gardens at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY since 1985 and an instructor at The New York Botanical Garden and IES since 1979.

APRIL 10TH
Uncommon Fruits for Every Garden
Pomona's Secrets: Hardy Delectable, Pest-Free Fruits

LEE REICH will introduce us to some fruits such as medlar, shipova, Nanking cherry and ligonberry, that are not well-known, but have delectable flavors and are easy to grow and cold-hardy. The fruits covered are generally free of pest problems so can be grown without spraying. Many require no more than a little, or no, pruning. And if that's not enough: some of the fruits covered --hardy kiwifruit, juneberry and cornelian cherry, for example--are borne on ornamental plants so are perfect for "edible landscaping." Lee Reich, PhD, is a garden writer, consultant and avid gardener who has worked in soil and plant research for the USDA and Cornell University. His writing includes the A NORTHEAST GARDENER'S YEAR, THE PRUNING BOOK, WEEDLESS GARDENING and UNCOMMON FRUITS FOR EVERY GARDEN, as well as frequent articles in such publications as FINE GARDENING, ORGANIC GARDENING and THE NEW YORK TIMES.

APRIL 24TH
