The Phantom Gardener 2008 Garden Workshop Series

COPING WITH THE WINTER BLUES:  STRATEGIES FOR GARDENERS

Do the cold, dark days of winter leave you feeling depressed, lethargic, irritable? Twenty percent of Americans suffer from some degree of Seasonal Affective Disorder. This 90-minute class with psychotherapist Pamela Neimeth, LMSW will help you ease your way through the dreary winter months. Meeting in Phantom Gardener's greenhouse to make use of the natural light, participants will learn and experience various mind/body and spiritually-oriented practices and leave with a "tool box" of coping skills that will take them through to the spring.

Even a tool deserves some TLC!  Time invested in the care of your gardening tools yields a big payoff in terms of their effectiveness.  Self-proclaimed “Tool Freak” Sally Spillane of WKZE’s The Gardening Show leads this entertaining overview of proper tool care and repair.  Topics include blade sharpening and replacement, seasonal and ongoing maintenance.

Briana discusses the many varieties of tomato seedlings available at Phantom, including the organic, hard-to-find heirloom varieties she grows herself.  A walk through the seedling tables yields information about early and later varieties, the differences between heirlooms, hybrids, and open-pollinated types, and which varieties are best for sauce, salsa, fresh eating, and so on.  Class will include a planting demo.

The Phantom Gardener himself, Norbert Lazar, has been pioneering organic gardening since long before its current buzz.  Let him guide you through fall garden maintenance that will ensure a healthy garden next spring.  Learn basic clean-up techniques, organic methods to improve your soil, and how to protect perennials over the winter.  A 2007 participant says she takes this workshop each year and learns new things every time!

Want to grow your own garlic? Briana introduces you to various species of garlic, as well as to planting dates and methods for the varieties that are best adapted to our region. Seed garlic will be available for purchase, so you can go home and apply your new-found knowledge.

BONSAI BASICS

Let bonsai expert Michael Devlin introduce you to both the art and science of the aesthetic miniaturization of trees.  Learn about plant material, pruning methods, transplanting and seasonal care, and watch a demonstration on proper potting techniques.  Come with questions and, if you wish, your own bonsai.  You’ll agree that good things come in small packages!
