The Phantom Gardener 2007 Garden Workshop Series
FRIDAY WORKSHOP: Jun 1 @ 6:30 pm / Julianne Klasen-Daoud (Note! This lecture meets Friday pm in the greenhouse.) Container gardens embrace all the qualities of a large garden on an intimate scale. Julianne, the Phantom's Queen of Containers, will demonstrate how to create an expressive display of dramatic color or understated beauty using both edible and ornamental plants. Broaden your concept of container gardens by incorporating a surprising selection of tropicals, herbs, annuals, perennials, grasses and more! SATURDAY WORKSHOPS: SEED-STARTING RESCHEDULED DUE TO SNOW: Sat Mar 24 @ 10 am Mar 17 @10 am / Briana Davis Please note!!! This lecture takes place in the greenhouse. Learn various techniques for starting your own vegetable seedlings. Understand which seeds can be sown directly into the garden soil, those that need to be started indoors and the appropriate planting time for each vegetable. Discuss seed varieties, soil mixes, lighting, water needs. Mar 24 @10 am / Doug Fincke This workshop also meets on Sunday Mar 25th. Please note!!! This workshop meets at Montgomery Place in Red Hook. Doug, fruit farmer at historic Montgomery Place, will take the class outside and into the orchards. Learn how to identify fruiting and flowering buds, growth habits of various trees and vines, and proper pruning techniques. Dress for warmth and mud, bring your questions and be prepared to enjoy the beauty of the early spring orchard! Ask questions about vegetable gardens and growing your own organic food. Briana Davis, founder and former owner of Hearty Roots Community Farm in Tivoli, has come to Phantom to share her knowledge and passion for edible plants. Dress appropriately to enjoy the work and weather! Jul 21@10 am / Briana Davis Briana will discuss fall and winter vegetable varieties, and planting times for extending the growing season from late fall into winter. Learn different methods for crop storage that can easily be attained in your own home or garden. Imagine homegrown organic vegetables all year long! Jul 28 @10 am / Sybille Schubert & Briana Davis With a brief overview of the history and basic principles of pickling & preserving, learn how to preserve foods using different methods: water bath canner, vinegar,lacto-fermentation and fruit preserves. The lecture will include recipes, demonstrations, tastings, and how to incorporate pickling and preserves into menu planning. Sept 22 @10 am / Briana Davis Learn about various species and varieties of garlic, planting dates and planting methods. Which varieties are best adapted to our local climate? Which end gets planted facing up? And what can you expect from your garlic plants throughout the season? All of these questions and more will be addressed during this workshop. Seed garlic will be available for purchase at this time. SUNDAY WORKSHOPS: Mar 4 @10 am / Virginia Luppino & Linda Anderson Special four-hour workshop! Bring your dreams and we'll guide you through the design process to focus on a small area of your landscape. Bring photos, measurements and site analysis (which we'll help you prepare in advance with email worksheets.) We'll show examples of various sucessful garden designs and discuss the good, the bad and the ugly. With this information, you will have the tools to envision and execute a beautiful, fulfilling garden combining color, texture and personal style expressed with site appropriate plants. Mar 11 @10 am / Brad Roeller With 30 years of evaluating a wide range of woody ornamental plants, Brad highlights trees, shrubs, and perennial plants that are inherently resistant to deer browsing. Discover the latest information about deer repellents and other proven methods to discourage deer. Learn about environmental and biological factors which influence deer and their choice of food that will assist homeowners and professionals in developing a strategy for "deer-proofing" their landscape. EARTH DAY lecture April 22 @10 am /Brad Roeller Brad Roeller will report on his research evaluating organic controls for landscape care including innovative treatments for blackspot and mildew on roses and disease-prone perennials. Highlighted are some of the "new" classes of organic controls, such as biopesticides, products utilizing harpin proteins, as well as the currently popular home-brewed compost tea. This information is importantand applicable to landscapers / homeowners with an interest in organic landscape and garden management. free! EARTH DAY lecture Sun. April 22 @12:30 pm / Larry Brown Larry will present the basics of solar electric systems (making some or all of your electricity from the sun). How do we incorporate a system into our lifestyle? How do we become more energy efficient? What incentives are there to offset some of the costs? There will be a demonstration of a water pumping system using a small pump, a bucket of water, and a solar panel to power the pump.free! EARTH DAY lecture April 22 @ 3pm /Norbert Lazar Learn the basics of tree planting, soil preparation and amendments, mulching and watering. Join Norbert as he plants a tree in the village of Rhinebeck to celebrate EARTH DAY! April 29 @ 10 am / Vern Rist Devern Rist, PhD Plant Pathology, self proclaimed over-educated tree hugger, Arborist / owner of Healthy Plants, will walk us through the Arboretum and woodland trails of Montgomery Place. Designed over 100 years ago, this historic site offers a rare view of mature specimens. Sept 9 @10 am / Virginia Luppino Bulbs are one of the most rewarding additions to the landscape whether they are announcing the arrival of spring or withstanding the heat of summer. Virginia will share the ins and outs of naturalizing bulbs in the landscape, deer resistant bulbs, summer blooming bulbs and more. Topics will include how to plant, to fertilize or not to fertilize and when to cut back foliage. Discussing both their understated subtleties and garish boldness you are bound to find a place in your landscape for a few new carefree favorites. Sept 16 @10 am / Maria Reidelbach Dutchess County is an amazingly fertile ground for fungi, those mysterious plants that lack chlorophyll and range from gorgeous to grotesque, delicious to deadly. The workshop will comprise two parts: a mushroom hunt in the woods and meadows and an identificiation session. Learn how and where to collect specimens, the important roles fungi play in the natural environment, how to begin to identify what we've found, and if we're lucky, perhaps something to take home for dinner! Bring a wide basket or paper shopping bag, some small paper or wax paper bags (not plastic), a small knife. Wear sneakers or hiking boots. Sept 30 @10 am / Norbert Lazar For the last class in our 2007 series, Norbert, the Phantom himself, will describe basic clean-up techniques for your garden.
